Apple, Verizon and AT&T may have taken a strong stand against the practice of jailbreaking, but at least hackers still have one of the most powerful governments in the world on their side. The Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China’s official iPhone application is only available on jailbroken devices.
The Chinese government has released an official app for people (both domestic and oversees) to keep tabs on what the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is up to. There’s just one catch: you’ll have to jailbreak your iPhone to …

In a recent piece for CNET, Kent German lists five features that the iPhone 5 should incorporate.
“Honestly, I can’t see Apple ever adding features like Flash support, expandable memory, and a removable battery, so I’m going to leave them off my own list of things that the new iPhone needs,” German writes. “I’ll also skip obvious points like a larger display in favor of five tiny software tweaks that could go a long way toward making the iPhone even simpler to use. And, more importantly, I can see Apple actually …

As you would expect, with Apple’s recent release of iOS 5’s fifth beta version came a jailbreak for the mobile operating system. Redsn0w 0.9.8b5, available for both Mac- and Windows-based iDevices, updates the tool to jailbreak the most recent beta for Apple’s upcoming iOS 5.
“For now the iPhone Dev Team is recommending that only developers that want to see if their apps for jailbroken devices work with the latest beta use the new version of redsn0w,” reads an article on Mobiputing. “In order to use the software you’ll need to …

AT&T and Verizon have now joined Apple’s fight against jailbreaking. The two mobile carriers have now blocked customers with jailbroken iPhones from tethering wireless data with jailbreak applications.
“(Verizon) now requires users have a hotspot-capable data plan if they want to tether data from their smartphones to other devices. Users who try to tether through jailbreak apps like MyWi will be redirected to a Verizon webpage where they can upgrade to a capable plan for an additional $20 a month,” reads a Monday article by Kay Asharya at Mobiledia.
The move to …

Thin and sleek is apparently what Apple is going for with the iPhone 5, if new images of the smartphone’s case are to be believed. According to Digital Trends’ Andrew Couts, Chinese firm Mettei Technology revealed the pictures, which are similar to leaked iPhone 5 photos from last month.
“Based on what we can gather from the images, the cases have a near-identical design to the case unveiled by 9to5Mac late last month. The designs are so similar, in fact, that they may well be one in the same. Both this …

When there’s no way else to reach someone, you can always send and access your SMS messages on a desktop computer with the new WiFiSMS. As iDownloadBlog reports, however, you must have a jailbroken iPhone in order to use the handy tweak.
“Are you looking for a more convenient way to send and receive your iPhone SMS messages throughout the day?” reads a Tuesday article on the blog. “If so, then WifiSMS might just be the jailbreak tweak that you’ve been looking for. Unlike apps like Google voice where you can …

The official website of upcoming jailbreak festival MyGreatFest includes a section titled, “Why We Jailbreak,” which features stories from several Apple users about their first jailbreaks and why they continue to customize their mobile devices. Twitter user @Echoriginal talks about initially wanting to give his devices a personal flavor and be a part of a larger community.
“I jailbroke my iPod touch, 2G MB at the time, for one sole purpose. I jailbroke it for the freedom that it gives the user and all the cool stuff you can use, such …

There’s been much debate over whether Apple will release its iPhone 5 in September or October, but Forbes’ Brian Caulfield writes in an article from last Monday, an October release would seriously affect the company’s third-quarter numbers.
“That could cut the number of iPhones sold during the quarter ending in September by 2 million units to 20 million from 22.0 million units,” reports Caulfield, citing a recent research note by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
As Munster says, there’s plenty of demand for a new iPhone, and those phones not sold in …

A recent article on The Inquirer explains the iOS security certificate problem corrected by Apple in its latest update of the mobile operating system, version 4.3.5 (4.2.10 on mobile gadgets running on the Verizon network). As it turns out, it could’ve been seriously exploited by hackers and jailbreakers.
Going into further detail about the security flaw and its ensuing update, the report explains that it “can be exploited by attackers to compromise SSL-protected communications on devices that haven’t been upgraded to the most recent version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The …
